    Havana Airport

José Martí International Airport (IATA: HAV, ICAO: MUHA), sometimes known by its former name Rancho-Boyeros Airport, is located 15 km (9 mi) southwest of Havana, Cuba, and is a hub for Cubana de Aviación, Aerogaviota, and Aero Caribbean, and former Latin American hub for Aeroflot Soviet Airlines.[2] It is Cuba's main international and domestic gateway, and serves several million passengers each year. The airport lies in the municipality of Boyeros and connects Havana with the rest of the Caribbean, North, Central and South America, Europe, and one destination in Africa. It is named in memory of patriot and poet José Martí. In the 1960s the airport was bombed by B-26 aircraft from Brigade 2506, a CIA-sponsored group of Cuban exiles attempting to liberate Cuba from Fidel Castro. Cubans are not allowed to own aircraft or use the airport for either private or commercial flight. Only government-owned aircraft are allowed to use the facilities. There are currently four passenger terminals in use at the airport, plus a freight terminal.[3] Terminal 1 is used primarily for domestic flights. Terminal 2 opened in 1988, primarily for charter flights to the United States. Ten years later on April 27, 1998, the International Terminal 3 was opened by Canada's then-Prime Minister, Jean Chrétien, and former Cuban president, Fidel Castro. International Terminal 3 offers many modern facilities and jetways that the former international Terminal 1 did not provide. Terminal 5 is operated by Aerocaribbean. Today, Copa Airlines is the foreign airline with most flights to the airport, operating 34 flights a week (roughly 5 daily flights) from Panama City, Panama, and Bogota, Colombia. The airport is operated by Empresa Cubana de Aeropuertos y Servicios Aeronáuticos (ECASA).

    “Decent hotel ”
Stayed five nights for business, in a room on "The Level", which is one of the Melia Cohiba's "executive floors". The Melia Cohiba is an international standard four-star hote. The rooms are a bit dated but clean, relatively spacious, and secure. I have a habit of leaving things lying around in the room but never had any problems with theft. A few pointers: 1. In-room wifi in-room is only available on the executive floors (I believe 18th floor and up), otherwise you will need to go to the lobby. The in-room wifi is not fast but works well enough, although on two nights out of five, I had difficulty connecting between 10pm-midnight. 2. Location: Taxi's to the old Town will cost around 7-8 CUC and takes around 15min. The drive along the Malecon is nice, but going back and forth gets a bit tedious if you're there primarily as a tourist, as the main points of interest are likely closer to the old Town. 3. Restaurants: There are a few Paladors around the hotel (ask the concierge) that are good, and a Jazz Cafe across the street (which I didn't get to), but little else in the neighbourhood. 4. There is a small convenience store across the street open 24 hours, where you can pick up some water or beer, but they have little else in terms of selection (unless you need cookies or uncooked rice). 5. Safety: The Malecon area next to the hotel is a bit on the edge, and is the not the "central" Malecon where everyone hangs out at night. However, it makes for a nice walk. Havana has to be one of the safest cities in Latin America, although of course common sense precautions are required, as with anywhere.

    “Among the Best in Havana”
If you want to stay at a super-fancy resort, don't go to Cuba. If you want to go to Cuba and stay at a place that is among the best available, the Cohiba is more than OK. It's not a U.S. five star hotel but it's solid. Service is friendly and rather efficient. Most of the staff speaks some English. Location is fine, 10 minutes from Ild Havana. Pool is nicest we saw anywhere in Cuba.

    “excellent hotel and freindly ”
we stayed at this hotel for three days prior to going to varedro in july facilities are excellent. the meals are very good the buffet meal in the evening is a bit overpriced. you can find some excellent local bars resturants within five mins walk. the staff was most helpful, when it rained they gave you an umbrella a nice touch.,also the conceirge got us a booking at the nacional to see the show. only downside is that when you give your card details for a tab they dont say its limit is 100.it becomes quite embarrassing when you have a second meal and they refuse your room card as you have reached your limit took some time to sort out but they did - be aware of this!!!!! .as this is an international hotel with aircrews and buisness you would of thought they just accept your card as a deposit as normal hotels all in all a lovely hotel to stay at this hotel and the morning conversations with the taxi drivers outside was great to find more about cuba- would recomend this as a base for havana.

“Great hotel! Not super luxurious but comfortable for a citytrip in Havana! ”
We stayed here for three nights and the hotel was just fine! We chose this hotel because we were traveling with an airline crew and this is their crew hotel. It is not the luxury that we as Europeans are used to but the rooms are big, the staff is very helpful (we added an extra guest and they arranged a three-person room for us!) with questions, the bathroom and toilets are clean and the beds are big and comfortable. Ofcourse it would be nice to stay at the best of the best hotel in Havana (Hotel Saratoga, for Beyonce fans: this is where she stayed in Havana with Jay-Z haha) in the Old Town itself but for a normal budget this hotel is a great second choice! It is only a 8 min taxi ride away from the Old Town of Havana and you can go there by either a taxi (don't pay over 10 CUC) or an "egg" (don't pay over 6 CUC). On your way to the Old Town you even drive by Hotel Nacional. The hotel is located directly at the Malecon Boulevard and at the water, very nice! As for eating an drinking I would recommend to find something in the Old Town itself! For a stay in Havana I would recommend this hotel but don't expect a 5* luxury!

    “Lovely hotel ”
Had a short 3 night stay at the start of our trip, I wish it was longer as i absolutely enjoyed my stay here. We were given a suite which was unexpected and the rooms were well catered for and very comfortable. Plenty of choices when it comes to food and we found the staff very pleasant. I would highly recommended this hotel, what a great start to my holiday.

    “Great stay in Havana ”
Just returned from a great five day stay in Havana. The Melia Cohiba provided great lodging with a comfortable room, wonderful pool and several great bars. Plus there is a Casa del Habana right there on the second floor! Clean, comfortable with a great breakfast. Used the laundry service and it was also reasonably priced. Overall very good hotel.

    “Nice and Predictable ”
Traveled with a small people-to-people tour group. Breakfast choices were plentiful, many people but dining room never seemed overcrowded. Servers pleasant. Don't let my less than over-the-top review mislead, high-rise convention-large hotels are not my preference. However, the hotel presented itself as clean, orderly, ample lobby seating; the guest room was clean and temperature comfortable.

    “Wonderful place to stay ”
We really enjoyed our time here, room was lovely with a superb view of the sea. There is a choice of restaurants, we did use the poolside bar. The pool is lovely too, a lovely place to rest after the hustle & bustle of Havana. Would recommend staying here. The concierges and doormen were especially helpful.

    “Good Choice for Havana ”
The most important thing to say is that this hotel is in Cuba, so it doesn't seem to be fair to compare it side-by-side with other business hotels around the world. The installations need some repair work, but this is one of Havana's top hotels. The staff is average at customer service. I thought it might be cultural, but you can find other Cubans in the restaurant and tourism industry who do an superb job at customer service. There is a distinct cigar/cigarette smell permeating through the hotel, but again, you have you remember that this is Cuba. I can't image the country ever discouraging smoking. The restaurant has a wide variety of options, and there are a few restaurants you can walk to if you get tired of the food. I didn't use the Internet, but if you're traveling for business purposes, I recommend you operate under the assumption that there is no Internet. It seems like it is glacially slow.

We have been to Cuba many times, if you require advice and or service, Mr. Hiran Almeida is one of the Best manager we have ever come across. He will go out of his way to accommodate you, however, the hotel keeps him very busy and do respect the fact he only has so much time...

Our "cultural exchange" trip to an open-border Cuba is a top-5 experience for my wife and I ... My elementary Spanish came in handy, even seemed welcomed by the Cubans we met everywhere... This hotel is really at least a 4-star by my paltry standards ... We stayed here 6 of our 8 days on the Island and could not have been better ... English spoken and understood in the hotel made this trip a breeze.

“Nice, clean hotel with helpful staff”
We visited Havana on a "people-to-people" tour and Insight Cuba chose this hotel for us. The hotel was modern and clean and we really don't have any major complaints. The staff was friendly and helpful and we enjoyed our stay. We had read reviews that said that the WiFi (~$15 CUC for two hours) was awful, but we found it to be pretty quick and we even got a signal in our 6th-floor room (but only for a short while). The nice thing about purchasing the WiFi is that you don't have to use the entire two hours at once, since you can log out and then log back in later. Breakfast was decent by Cuban standards and the Italian restaurant located inside the hotel was great. The only negative thing that we have to say about the hotel is that sometimes the water would change temperature dramatically for a few seconds while we were taking showers. I'm not sure if they were having issues with their water heater at the time or not, but overall we enjoyed our stay there.

    “Excellent in every respect ”
Just back from a two week stay in Cuba which included three nights in this hotel as part of a twin centre break (with Sol Cayo Coco). Although our stay was short, we couldn't fault it in any way and it's probably the best hotel I've ever had the pleasure of staying at. We emailed the director in advance of our trip to request a high level & this request was met with a view from the 16th floor - fantastic start. We were also given a suite which meant having not only a large bedroom & bathroom but also a living/sitting area. We stayed on a bed & breakfast basis and I have to say the food was exceptional & the selection plentiful. My only gripe was the cold plates which I was eating hot food from - I like my food to stay hot when it's served hot & a cold plate instantly begins to cool everything down. We had planned to max out as many of Havana's sights & attractions as we could which meant early starts and late finishes. Therefore the free shuttle bus that the hotel offers wasn't an option for us since it departed too late in the morning & we would of missed out if we waited for it. Taxi's are cheap though, we got to the Morro castle for 15CUC & the end of the Malecon for 7-10CUC. My advice for people getting taxi's would not be to get them from directly outside the hotel as we found the prices the drivers were trying to agree were somewhat higher than those we hailed on Malecon Avenue. I think the drivers have a perception that everyone staying in the hotel can afford that bit extra but we were on a budget & spent plenty enough across the city on other things. The hotel is a lot further out (from the old city where the tourists tend to visit) than a lot of the other options but that aside I wouldn't hesitate in recommending this hotel & going back.

“Best combination of location, facilities and value. ”
A large modern hotel on the waterfront (Malecon) about a 10 minute taxi to Old Havana (About$6). Two very good restaurants and a large attractive bar off the lobby; great for people watching. Some other good restaurants nearby. Overall service was very good except trying to get coffee in the breakfast room. If your breakfast is not included, try the executive breakfast in the Lobby Bar. I prefer this hotel to the Parque Central, which is also nice but much more expensive. Cohiba has a lovely pool.

    “Great Hotel ”
The Melia Cohiba was part of our two resort stay while in Cuba. Reception area was large and nicely decorated with fresh flowers, check in/out of our room was quick and easy the staff were very helpful. Our room was large and clean, we had a view over the ocean we were on the 10th floor the sunset were wonderful, the bed comfortable, bathroom clean with the usually toiletries. We were bed and breakfast only and the breakfasts were fantastic we wanted for nothing, the quality and quantity was very good and we were serenaded by a string quartet and the staff were very attentive. The swimming pool is sheltered, clean, plenty of sunbeds and pool towels plentiful. The pool bar served snack, there was 3 other restaurants in the hotel but we did not use them as we ate out in Havana with friends.

Absolutely fantastic hotel, we were treated to an amazing room with a panoramic view, a sunken bath and a huge bed. The service was brilliant - the staff are so helpful and accommodating, something we found a natural trait of Cuban folk. Breakfast is great, something for everyone and you also get treated to a string quartet and a glass if fizz if you like! The concierge on the desk near reception really was fantastic - he helped make our short stay even better with local knowledge, advice and ordering taxi's and drivers for us. The concierge will organise a short drive around Havana in an old car for you which is not just great fun but also very reasonably priced. Thanks Melia Cohiba! We would definitely return for a stay in Havana

    “Nice hotel ”
We stayed at the Melia Cohiba for three nights at the beginning of a Jules Verne tour. It is a large tower block building with wonderful views of Havana and the Malecon. The rooms are large and clean, the safe did not work in our original room but we were eventually moved to another. They go on about not leaving valuables around and then the safe doesn't work! The food was average at best, breakfast omelettes were ok but otherwise everything was a bit bland and uninteresting. Coffee dreadful. Although there was an extensive wine list they didn't seem to have anything that was on it! No Vinha Sol!!! Beer and wine was all reasonably priced. With the hotel being high rise it was quite noisy at night if the wind blew, sounded like a vacuum cleaner! Light sleepers be prepared! All in all a very nice place.

Beyond the impeccable cleanliness, quality and location of this hôtel, it has brilliant views on to the Molecon, the swimming pool is sheltered, clean and cosy and the food, whether buffet or A La Carte could not be better quality. As before, the staff is extremely professional, kind, attentive and make your stay even better. We personally thank the quality and customer service manager. A large hotel located on the Malecon (On the coast), about a $6 taxi ride to the centre of the old city. Has a large pleasant lobby and very nice lobby bar; great for people watching. Rooms are large and comfortable. Five stars in Cuba is not 5 stars but it is a very nice hotel and much better value than the Iberostar Parque Central, which also a very good hotel. It has a very nice pool and two very good restaurants. There are more good restaurants nearby. Also a very nice cigar bar.

Hotel restaurant dining from breakfast to dinner was well presented and prepared exceptionally well. Hats off to all with thanks. We had a beautiful suite on the 7th floor and saw both sunrise and sunset from the Malecon view. Shuttle service on the hour from hotel to Havana, and back was an unexpected pleasure with punctual and courteous drivers, Independent taxis were available if needed just outside the hotel. “Excellent rooms, a bit out the way ”
We stayed here as part of a twin centre booked through Thomas Cook. The Hotel itself is not located in the centre but they do provide a free bus which you can book onto through the concierge. The Conceirge will also provide you with a free map of havana with all the local sights marked onto it and also good places to eat- it proved invaluable whilst we were wandering around havana! Los Nardo's restaurant in havana was marked on the map given us by the concierge and it was amazing!! i walked up the stairs and thought OMG what am i letting myself in for, turned a corner and could not believe this place! talk about a hidden gem! would definitely recommend a visit here! they don't scrimp on portion sizes. Also worth noting is that we booked a private tour in an old car through the conceige who was happy to recommend good local drivers who could speak different languages. Our driver was a lady called Tuti and she had a pink Barbie car which even my husband loved. We did about 2 hours to get our bearings and it cost about £40- worth every penny! We stayed on a B+B basis and there are plenty restaurants within this hotel that you can pay to eat in which were good value and not over expensive. The rooms were very large and we had a jacuzzi bath! i would definitely reccomend this hotel.

“Not a five stars hotel. ”
My wife and me stayed from July 26 - Aug 02.2014. First we meet when we arrived was no body to bring our suitcases to the reception, we had to find a guy in the lobby. The check in was quick and at the end the receptionist asked us "if we will bring the suitcase on our on or we need help?", that was unbelievable for five start hotel. I had to ask her call somebody to bring our suitcase up to the room for us. The room was clean and the bed comfortable but five stars hotel should not have mirror and bathtub in the washroom stained, it is not comfortable. Another inconvenience: all power outlets in the room only 220 v, only one 110 v and it is located in the washroom then if you have a few electric items like cellphones, electric toothbrush, electric shaver, etc better bring with you a multiplug to connect in the 110 v power outlet in the washroom otherwise you can not charge all them on time. If you need anything after 4 pm and you call Guest Service be prepared to wait because they have at that time only one lady per floor. I asked for weight scale (not in the rooms) and got it near to an hour later, the reason for the wait time: "after 4 pm we have only one lady per floor and she is busy now". We always tip all the services and mostly the lady who was cleaning our room who did good job every day. The food was good but most of the time we had to call waitresses because they were busy talking each other and did not notice we need them. Swimming pool they says is only for guest but you can see there every day people that clearly are not staying in the hotel. If you need a taxi from the hotel it is a flat rate where ever you need to go: to center of Havana 10 CUC, if you need to go farther 15 CUC, etc but for same trip private taxis charge you only 6 or 7 CUC. Years a go we stayed at Hotel Panorama and for similar inconveniences and really bad customer service we decided not come back to that hotel. To come back to Melia Cohiba we have to think about it, this is not 5 stars hotel, rooms need maintenance, elevators need maintenance (two of them all the time were out of service), etc.

    “Disappointing ”
We stayed at the Melia Cohiba in Febrary, 2014 for 4 days. Although the hotel was built in the last 20 + years, the rooms are beginning to look quite dated. Our room was a suite: it had a living room with tv and desk, the bedroom, and bathroom. The suite overlooked the Malecon, Havana's sea walk promenade. We were even given a welcome bottle of rum. The bathroom was nice: roomy, tiled with marble. However, the bedroom really looked dated and lacked style: dull curtains, beds with fairly hard mattresses. The living room also looked dated. All could be overlooked except for the room temperature. It was freezing and we couldn't raise the temperature so we finally turned off the a/c. It was left on during the day and before we went out at night we turned it off. I eventually caught a cold. The free buffet breakfast was lovely: several kinds of coffee (e.g. American, Cuban) and lots of fresh fruits, yogurt, breads. Compared to other hotels in Havana this is one of the best. But on a scale of international hotels, I would give it 3 1/2 stars.

We stayed here as part of a twin city stay. I thought the hotel was just lovely. Beautiful lobby and reception. We were checked in very quickly and because I had previously emailed and asked for a room high up for the views, we were on the 16th floor. The room was large with 2 double beds and a single round a corner. The room was clean and the bed comfortable. We only had breakfast here and this was fine. The coffee was nice and strong. We used the pool area one day as our internal flight was delayed by 9 hours (no problem with us keeping our room on) and this was a nice place to relax. We did have a few daiquiri's at the bar and these were just delicious!! Oh and I thought the art in the hotel was lovely.

“Great choice for a stay in Havana ”
The Melia Cohiba is a lovely hotel. I stayed here for 3 days before heading to Varadero. The lobby, dining rooms and pool are gorgeous and the staff are very professional and helpful. The location is in Vedado, not the main tourist area, but a daily shuttle bus will take you to Old Havana for free. Just be aware of when the shuttle leaves and returns and you won't have to pay for a taxi. I really liked the location personally, it was right next to the Malecon, and thus had fantastic ocean views, sea breeze, and the Malecon is a great place to hang out in the evenings. It's a quiet and more relaxing setting than being in the heart of Havana. Vedado is a nice neighbourhood for sightseeing too, there are beautiful embassies only minutes from the hotel along the Avenida Paseo, and lots of friendly locals who will be interested in talking to you. A couple of other local spots to check out near the hotel, a couple of blocks towards Old Havana along Calle 3 is a little roadside cafeteria that has GREAT milkshakes and fruit smoothies for the equivalent of 10 cents Canadian! Perfect for a hot day, be sure to leave a little tip for the lady making it for you. There is another cafeteria in the small mall right outside of the hotel entrance where you can pick up bottled water for a great price. A nice man named Dariem works there some days, he speaks great English and can give you tips about touring in Havana. Be sure to tip him too. My room was very nice and the hotel is so tall that the view was spectacular, I watched the sun go down over the ocean every night! The air conditioning works really well which is a relief after a hot and humid day wandering the city. All in all I think this hotel is great and I would stay here again!

“Perfect for a short stay in Havana ”
Whilst visiting Cuba for the first time to attend our friends wedding in Cayo Coco, 8 out 22 of us decided it would be rude not to visit Havana! We didn't have a choice of hotel due to booking the twin centre holiday through Thomas Cook. However, we were not disappointed. Check in/check out was straight forward and whilst awaiting our departure, our bags were locked away behind reception until we needed them. This allowed us to relax by the pool and enjoy our last few hours in Havana. The rooms are very clean and spacious and we almost had a panoramic view of the sea. The bed was comfortable with nice pillows. The bathroom was also spacious with double sinks, bath/shower and toilet. The room had large mirrored wardrobes with a safe inside and ironing board/iron. The breakfast buffet was available every morning 7am - 10am. The buffet had plenty to offer and the fruit was so fresh, it would be cut in front of your eyes. The mango was the best I have ever tasted! One night we ate in the Italian restaurant in the hotel before going to Club Tropicana. The service was good and we enjoyed our meals. The pool and surrounding area was gorgeous. There was plenty of space to sunbath or shelter in the shade. There is also a bar serving snacks and drinks. There were children in the pool but they were all well behaved! A BIG hello to our Brazilian friend Stephen (age 10!) who made us friendship bracelets! I have noticed previous reviews complain about the location of Melia Cohiba but we didn't find it a problem at all. There is a free shuttle bus and plenty of taxis outside the hotel that will take you to the centre of Havana. I think a taxi cost us around 5 CUCs which about £3! Overall I would definitely recommend this hotel. It seemed like the place to be for all age groups, it was always buzzing with a really nice atmosphere. Whilst we were there we saw a wedding reception, a birthday party and friends joined to watch the world cup.

    “First trip to Cuba ”
Our first trip to Cuba. This was booked through Thomas Cook and was a two centre holiday (3 nights in Havana at the Melia Cohiba and 10 nights at the Melia Peninsula Varadero) - cost was £2550 2 of us travelling, 4th July to the 19th July ? Room was 1011 in the Cohiba in Havana and 2853 in Peninsula Varidero. We had not been to Cuba before so it was virgin territory for us We arrived in Varaderro and were transferred to Havana (2 hour transfer) Melia Cohiba ? what a fantastic hotel. It had everything, room was fantastic (state room like with, almost a 360 degree view), Jacuzzi, two tv?s (one showing cable), free safe, iron etc. This was a bed and breakfast option and the food was really good too. Pool area was very good, sunbeds available all throughout the day, area was clean and tidy. Definitely worthy of the 5 stars. If there's any complaint at all we would have, it would be that its too far out of town but that's not a big problem with all the available taxis. Thank You Cohiba for an enjoyable stay and for running what we would describe as one of the best hotels we have ever visited.

    “Amazing Experience ”
Spent here 2 nights. Hotel staff were super friendly and welcoming. They were helpful trying to guide us through all we wanted to do and giving us tips and tricks to travel around Cuba the best way possible. Lobby and pool area are pretty impressive. They had fresh flowers decorating the hotel and it seemed extremely clean. Lunch at the pool restaurant was pretty tasty, however service that day was a little slow even though there were only 3 tables filled. Room was up to par. Pretty wide and with great size windows. During this time of the year it?s very hot and the a/c worked to perfection. Towels and linen were what you would expect at a Melia hotel. King size comfortable beds. Cable tv. Breakfast service was included and quality was ok. Fruits, breads, eggs, cold cuts and cheeses. Some traditional Cuban cooking. You pick. One weird thing. They only had a weird elongated pillow. If you wanted any other pillow you needed to order them from an a la carte menu (with extra charges). One tiny cockroach did appear in the bathroom but other than that both the room and hotel (overall) seemed constantly clean. We visited their Havana Café to watch the show and had a blast. Awesome performers and great staff. Dinner was just ok, I did find the packages (including cover fee and meal) a bit pricey for Cuban standards. This hotel is located in the Vedado area a pretty safe neighborhood just a few steps away from the famous Malecon. Keep in mind It is not walking distance (under the Cuban summer sun) from the old Havana center and historic sites. Protip: Do not get room service. Price is more than double than what you would pay at any of their restaurants.

“Stunning hotel inside, not much around it!”
We stayed here on our honeymoon doing a twin resort stay in Cuba. The Hotel isn't much to look at from the outside but it is STUNNING on the inside we were upgraded and had on the the corner suites it was beautiful with a panoramic view. the pool was small but used little by other guests so ideal! The location of the hotel isn't great you can really just go for a walk. the only way to go any where is to book on the free shuttle bus into Havana central. (its free) They then drop you right off by the people trying to sell you horse rides which isn't great and you cant get away from them! Hotel restaurants were well over priced compared to anywhere else in Cuba. Only good one was the Italian. Pop across the road to the music bar they do food and have great live music! Couldn't fault the rooms or hotel, but rep very unhelpful considering we were there for only 3 nights/ 2 days!

    “Excellent Hotel ! ”
We stayed here for three nights as part of our package deal with Thomas Cook. I had e-mailed the hotel prior to arrival asking for a high room and we got just what we asked for on the 11th floor with a view of the city out of one window and The Malecon out of the other. The room was actually a suite with separate lounge and of excellent standard. Yes, the hotel is a short taxi ride out of old Havana but the fares for taxis, coco-taxis and even cadillacs are all quite reasonable (between 7 and 10 pesos) so don't let the travel aspect put you off. Staff at the hotel were very good in all departments and could not do enough to assist you which we found pleasing. We dined two of our evenings at the Italian Restaurant on the second floor - again excellent service and the food was first class - the wine choice was also very good. All in all I would not hesitate to recommend this hotel to anyone staying in Havana.
