  • Museum of Archeology Guamuhaya is located in Trinidad
  • As if it were stagnant in time, Trinidad gives the visitor the extraordinary charms of a vivacious museum-city embedded between the sea and the mountain. Trinidad comprises an area of 1 165Km2 and it is located to the center-south of Cuba, facing the Caribbean Sea, in the mountainous skirts of Guamuahaya or Escambray Mountains, belonging to the province of Sancti Spíritus. You can get there by roads that connect it with the rest of the country, and it has an airport for small and medium size airplanes.

Proclaimed World Heritage by UNESCO in 1988, the old Villa de la Santísima Trinidad founded in the 16th century shows togeher with its multiple architectural values, a wealth of traditions and cultures where Hispanic and African traits are combined. A culture of craftsmanship and ceramics has been transmitted notably from generation to generation. In this area the gentle atmosphere of small cities reigns, where the creative capacity and their residents' wisdom have contributed to preserve from the past their most important values.

Together with historical and cultural values of the territory, the attractiveness of the mountainous Escambray area, its beaches and the beauties of its sea bottoms, as well as its people's hospitality, are the particular features of this city. Trinidad is one of those cities that invites you to travel all around them. Its museums, squares and stone-paved streets make it possible to go back in time. Once in the territory you are invited to know the symbolic Manaca- Iznaga Tower, from where you can see the Valley of the Sugar Mills; Ancón and María Aguilar beaches, Caburní Waterfall, the Cave of the Skulls and Zaza Lake, host of periodic trout fishing tournaments. To visit its nearby keys among which Key Blanco of Casilda stands out are of great interest for those who are keen in the art of deep diving.

    Guamuhaya Archeological Museum
There are different samples that give you a historical background on Cuba, since the pre-Columbian times up to the period of the conquest and colonization. The tradition reasserts that in the place where the museum is located, there was the house in which Hernan Cortez lived before leaving for the conquest of Mexico. Different objects that give you a Cuban prehistoric background since 3 500 years ago B.C. up to the conquest and colonization of the country. Archeology (unique pieces in Cuba).

    Guamuhaya
Yet another fine colonial mansion houses the town's Guamuhaya Archaeological Museum, with its collections of pre-Columbian cultural relics and displays of local Cuban fauna and flora. Visitors to the Museo de Arqueologia y Ciencias Naturales will find an assortment of stuffed animals and skeletons, as well as a recreation of a period kitchen from the 19th century. This is possibly worth a look if you are passing this way, but doesn't come highly recommended.

    “Worth looking ”
We weren't as badly pestered by staff here as we had been at other museums. There is little in English, but the Spanish wasn't too hard to make out. The captions are not very complicated. Two exhibits struck me very strongly. There is a recreation of the grave of a young woman who lived and died in Cuba 2500 years... More

“Interesting if you are interested in Archaeology ”
An interesting look at the archaeology of the Trinidad area. Don't touch the artifacts that are sitting open on the shelves! You will be closely (about a foot away) monitored for the rest of your visit by two to three attendants! Not much information given and it was totally in Spanish (but we didn't expect anything else). Cuba's museums were... More

“Not much to see and you have to pay to take photos ”
The exhibition is fairly small with no English translations. It only costs 1 CUC entry but you have to pay another 1 CUC to take photos (which is nothing really, so not a complaint, just an observation).

Not impressive but interesting to see how wealthy colonials lived and some artefacts of pre-European settlement. Takes only 30 mins a guide makes it understandable and worth a tip

“Fine for a quick browse but staff annoying ”
Guidebooks indicate that this museum has been closed for some time ? it is now open but hardly worth the effort. A few rooms on the main floor of this 18th century mansion are open with displays ? one documents the history of the house itself, the others feature very modest displays based on artifacts uncovered from sites of pre-Colombian... “Worth a few pesos to see ”
Like many of the museums in Trinidad it isn't a huge building, conveniently located with a few other museums in the historical section of town and only costs 1-2 CUC and sometimes extra for pictures. Many of the museums in Trinidad have some English writing or a guide to help you out.
