Description Caves: Martin Infierno Cave, Cienfuegos Airport. Cuba
This important natural site is a cavern of enormous dimensions, whose initial formation dates back to the Pliocene Pleistocene. It is found in the upper part of Río Hondo, which drains its waters towards the southern coast. This is part of the northern slope of the Guamuaya mountain massif, in the municipality of Cumanayagua. The cavern features the tallest stalagmite in Cuba and one of the largest in the world, according to the Speleologic Society of Cuba who carried out the measurement, its official height is 67,2 m. It has a very large inclined cavity, with five great halls of vast proportions, that together with the rest of the galleries, sum up a linear total of 793 m and an off-level of 190 m. Inside one can find the only “gypsum flowers” ("flores de yeso") reported in Cuban territory. They measure over 30 cm, and resemble a helicoidal or rolled up shape giving the impression of a flower. Also reported is the presence of another mineral rarity, that is formed by microcrystalline calcite known as "moon milk". This is a site of infinite scientific discovery for learning about the evolution of the territory, due to the characteristics of the deposits that are found inside, as well as the evidence of endangered fauna such as the tocororo, the sijú owl and the Cuban kites and mountain hawks.

French émigrés from Bordeaux and Louisiana founded the settlement of Fernandina de Jagua on a large, calm bay on the Caribbean Sea on April 22, 1819. In 1830, when it was upgraded to a town, its name was changed to Cienfuegos, in honor of José Cienfuegos, the Governor-General of Cuba. Fifty years later, it was proclaimed a city and, for its beauty, was called "the pearl of the south." By the end of the 19th century, it had become the fourth most important city in the country.,
Considered the crowning jewel of Cuban architectural in the 19th century, Cienfuegos stands out for the perfect design of its streets and for the refinement and good taste of the buildings in the historic center of the city, which has been declared a national monument. When visiting, stop by the Casa del Fundador (the Founder's House); Nuestra Señora de la Purísima Concepción (Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception) Cathedral; the Tomás Terry Theater; the Ferrer Palace; and the José Martí Park, which contains the only arch of triumph in Cuba.,
Other attractions include the Prado Promenade, the Valle Palace, the museums of Naval and Provincial History, and the Reina (Queen's) Cemetery.,
Farther out from the center of the city, tour the Nuestra Señora de los Angeles de Jagua (Jagua for short) Fortress, the Tomás Acea Cemetery and the Botanical Gardens.,
In addition to these cultural and historic attractions, Cienfuegos has excellent facilities for scuba diving and other water sports, nature tourism and thermal baths. - Your first-hand experiences really help other travelers. Thanks!

Review about Caves: Martin Infierno Cave
Excellent
IbrahimVery Nice
As you head towards Trinidad, you can enjoy some stunning panoramas of the neighbouring Escambray Mountains and the surrounding countryside. Many coral reefs lie just a short distance from the coastline and offer endless possibilities for scuba diving. There are innumerable attractions dotted along this Caribbean coast, such as the Palmares restaurant at the Hacienda La Vega, and the Cueva Martin Infierno caves, which are said to contain the tallest stalagmite on the planet. You may like to consider staying at the Villa Guajimico, where guests have a choice of beachfront bungalows. This is the ideal place to base yourself if you enjoy countryside treks and scuba diving.
