French émigrés from Bordeaux and Louisiana founded the settlement of Fernandina de Jagua on a large, calm bay on the Caribbean Sea on April 22, 1819. In 1830, when it was upgraded to a town, its name was changed to Cienfuegos, in honor of José Cienfuegos, the Governor-General of Cuba. Fifty years later, it was proclaimed a city and, for its beauty, was called "the pearl of the south." By the end of the 19th century, it had become the fourth most important city in the country.,

Considered the crowning jewel of Cuban architectural in the 19th century, Cienfuegos stands out for the perfect design of its streets and for the refinement and good taste of the buildings in the historic center of the city, which has been declared a national monument. When visiting, stop by the Casa del Fundador (the Founder's House); Nuestra Señora de la Purísima Concepción (Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception) Cathedral; the Tomás Terry Theater; the Ferrer Palace; and the José Martí Park, which contains the only arch of triumph in Cuba.,

Other attractions include the Prado Promenade, the Valle Palace, the museums of Naval and Provincial History, and the Reina (Queen's) Cemetery.,

Farther out from the center of the city, tour the Nuestra Señora de los Angeles de Jagua (Jagua for short) Fortress, the Tomás Acea Cemetery and the Botanical Gardens.,

In addition to these cultural and historic attractions, Cienfuegos has excellent facilities for scuba diving and other water sports, nature tourism and thermal baths.

    Botanical Cienfuegos
The Jardin Botanico Soledad is one of the star attractions in Cienfuegos. It was set up by Edwin Atkins, an American sugar magnate, in 1900, after which it was supplanted by Harvard University. There are around 2,000 species of plants spread over a wide area here (approximately 220 acres / 90 hectares), making this the largest of its type in Cuba. There are also some nice walking trails as well as bird watching possibilities, although it does tend to be lacking in services and appearance. The Soledad Botanical Gardens are to be found just out of town, off the road to Trinidad.

    Botanical Garden
The Jardin Botanico de Cienfuegos is situated approximately 16 km / 10 miles to the east of the city and is amongst the largest botanical gardens in the whole of Cuba. Home to in excess of 2000 plant species and an extensive collection of palms, as well as a large number of different bamboos, the gardens were established at the beginning of the 20th century and are best reached by either taxi or rental car.

    “bring your tropical gear ”
The botanical garden is beautiful, but not really a 'garden'. A jungle is more like it. We were wearing shorts and slippers and could not really walk around. I wish we would have worn long trousers, decent shoes and brought some insect-repellent.

“Well worth a trip - and the bar has great mojitos ”
Suffice it to say that on a blazingly hot day the guide managed to keep 3 potentially grumpy teenagers engaged, interested and even amused for a good couple of hours. A lovely relaxing walk in te shade with excellent knowledgable guide and a handy bar at the end

    “Don't hold your breath... ”
We drove to this Jardin as it had been recommended by a few people. I must have missed something, as it was like walking in an overgrown wood - except that they are palms. Didn't see one flower - well almost. Hard underfoot, unless you stick to the path. You can wander for miles, so maybe it would have been... More

    “Nothing special ”
For me and my wife it was waste of time and money. Nothing special at all. Garden with chaotic trees without description.

    “Wonderful gardens ”
The gardens have wonderful plants and we had a friendly guide who helped us enjoy the gardens. If you are a real botanist, you might try to do more preparation. Our tour took about an hour, but you could spend longer. There is a cafe and clean toilets with a friendly lady attendant.

    “Well worth a visit ”
We stopped here and were glad we did. You can walk all the way through the park and experience all the different specimens of tress and plants. We had a guide take us through and explained everything to us. Beautiful place to visit.

“Not to be missed, but do take a guide ”
We went there on our way back from swimming with dolphins at the Delfinario (the taxi driver added that stop for an extra 10 CUC including waiting time). A very knowledgeable guide with excellent command of English showed us bamboos, giant tropical fig trees, baobab, mahogany, cashew, etc. He was clearly a biologist and we learnt an awful lot in...
